Development History
Traced directly to the 1979 Geländewagen (cross-country vehicle) commissioned by the Shah of Iran, the G-Class spent decades as an unyielding military and utility vehicle before AMG transformed it into an ultra-luxury performance icon. In 2018, Mercedes-Benz completely overhauled the model (W463A), replacing the front solid axle with an independent double-wishbone suspension developed alongside AMG, introducing electromechanical rack-and-pinion steering, and dropping in the handcrafted 4.0-liter 'hot inside V' twin-turbo M177 engine. Despite radical modern chassis refinement and digital MBUX cockpits, the G 63 preserves every hallmark of its DNA: three 100% mechanical differential locks, low-range transfer case, external door hinges, and the iconic metallic door latch click.
