Development History

The BMW XM was developed by BMW M as a flagship performance SUV designed to explore the combination of electrification, luxury, and high-performance engineering. Its development was previewed by the BMW Concept XM, unveiled in December 2021. The production BMW XM was officially revealed in September 2022 and entered production in December 2022 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA. It was introduced as a 2023 model and became the first standalone BMW M vehicle since the BMW M1, originally produced from 1978 to 1981. BMW equipped the XM with its M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine and BMW eDrive electric technology, creating a plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of delivering substantial combined power and torque. The vehicle also introduced a distinctive design direction for BMW M, with a bold front grille, dramatic proportions, premium interior features, and advanced chassis technology. The original XM produces a combined 653 hp and 800 Nm of torque. BMW subsequently expanded the range with the more powerful XM Label, delivering up to 748 hp and 1,000 Nm in its original high-performance specification. The BMW XM represents a significant milestone in BMW M's transition toward electrified performance vehicles while retaining the character and engineering focus associated with the M division.
