Development History

An exercise in functional muscularity, the F90 sports a weight-saving carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof to drastically lower its center of gravity. Aerodynamic twin-stalk M wing mirrors, widened front tracks with functional air breathers, aggressive front bumper intakes, and iconic quad exhaust tips integrated into a rear diffuser announce its motorsport intent while maintaining discreet executive elegance. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017 for the 2018 model year, the F90 marked the first time an M5 utilized all-wheel drive, solving traction limitations of previous rear-drive generations without sacrificing classic BMW rear-wheel drifting dynamics. The lifecycle received an LCI facelift in 2020, followed in 2021 by the halo M5 CS—a stripped-out, carbon-clad, 627 hp track weapon that became the fastest production BMW ever tested around multiple world circuits. The S63 4.4L twin-turbo V8 architecture of the F90 M5 served as the fundamental baseline for the BMW M8 GTE endurance prototype, taking class victories at the grueling 24 Hours of Daytona in both 2019 and 2020 and competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
